Parents' Weekend

Molly and Mick are in Maryland this weekend to visit the sullen teen, who is now six weeks deep into her Freshman year.  She seems to be adjusting well, though there is a bit of an issue with her room situation. It seems that every other weekend her roommate "hostesses" her boyfriend in their tiny room, which they refuse to leave for 48 hours.

I asked her,"what do they do, talk, have sex, sleep?"

She responded, "All three, I suppose."

So that means the sullen one feels a little unwelcome there, or at least a little "awkward", and this is one of those boyfriend camped out in the room weekends.

So here we are, all three of us, sharing a room at a local motel on parents' weekend.

That means that Molly and Mick are definitely celebrating an unplanned "abstinence weekend" for our little getaway.  There will definitely be some pent up demand when we finally pull into our driveway Sunday night.  Unless we can find a dry, private space along the highway back to the heartland for a quickie.

I did offer to get a little intimidating with the boyfriend. Maybe roll out my Jersey accent, and ask him for his address and license plate number so some of my "friends" could look him up. Sort of the way Tony Soprano would deal with a problem like this to help out his daughter  Meadow during her Columbia days. But our daughter clearly does not want her parents to meddle, and Dad backed off.

It has been good to see our daughter though, and to see some of this old Harbor town that we've never seen before. We even drove by the old home of Edgar Allen Poe, which is in an neighborhood that now seems better suited for a scene from The Wire than  The Raven. Sadly, the home is shut "until further notice", and the girls seem less than enthused about even getting out of the car.

I did see one scene in the College Bookstore that caught my eye though, under the heading "Reference":

It's a little unsettling to think that when our daughter is assigned research she may be doing it with the whole 50 Shades trilogy.

  1. I'm sure your teen is wishing for a single room or at least a single roommate. I note that "Ellen" is filed under research too. Cute

  2. I drove by the Poe house on Friday with my wife and she refused the offer to walk up to the house. We just finished a vacation that saw us visit the Poe House in Philadelphia as well. I was a good husband and drove around the block several times as she hopped to visit the Poe grave in Baltimore.

  3. I like the idea of the Tony Soprano move on the roommate's boyfriend. Remember the episode when he and Meadow visited that college up in Maine? At least you didn't think about going that route.

As far as finding Fifty Shades at the college bookstore, remember it is a liberal arts college. I bet you could even find a copy at one of those liberal Jesuit universities ;)
